There is a hum or a fan that roars with persistence as this islandic Airbus pushes us to our destination. Broken syllabic voices are heard quietly murmuring while the blue screen din back lights some of the seats from the personal TVS implanted in the back of headrests. My husband tries to sleep. I can feel him doze deep and then startle awake when the trash cart pushes by him. "Bring out your dead" comes to mind from Monty Python. Not your dead really, just you empty plastic cups and bottles... It's late. I'm punchy. In the quiet I think of Natalie who has the window seat. She has been traveling all day. She's from DC (I think) and for her 35 th birthday she bought herself a two week tour of Scotland! She's going first to the Islands for their annual folk festival. Her musician boyfriend has played the festival in the past and has set her up to be a guest of one of the organizers. Then she's on to investigate her roots with stops in Aberdeen and Glasgow. She's traveling alone. Says she prefers it. She's sound asleep against the window now. I think of Air Travel and how it's changed. In 1974 I took my first flight to ski the Alps. We dressed up to travel then. Now we are a motley overnight flight of baggy warm ups and pajama bottoms. Back then... You read, did crosswords, played cards. Now personal computer screens give you many options of entertainment to pass the time. As I type my phone is being charged! I love this feature! Every "carrier" needs to offer this charging service. Now the flying public pays for any thing you eat or drink but there was a time where food and soft drinks were included in your airfare. Crazy right? Late night early morning wonderings!
