Mr Stowe gets up on Tuesday mornings, puts on a clean shirt Gets in his beat up Subaru wagon and drives the pasteurs of his 300 acre farm to meet the riders of Vermont Bike Tours.
On tuesdays he has a sense of purpose.
He is 93.
He has 220 cows under 2 years old and all scheduled for castration. I asked. "Why?"
He replied "it's what we do".
"at last count, we have 43 cats in the barn" he announces proudly. These cats are employed, skittish and uninterested in us.
Mr Stowe grew up here. Raised a family here. On this little piece of heaven between the Adiorondaks and the Green Mountains. His leathered skin, coke bottle glasses and worn yellow teeth are a testament to a life hard lived. But a life of purpose.
He tells me his wife died of cancer 20 years ago. He looks to the earth and says "I'll never forgive her for that."
For now, this 93 year old farmer gets up, gets dressed and drives his Subaru which is held together by duck tape and zip ties, every Tuesday to share his world with strangers.
a gift...a sense of purpose!
